Rottweiler Dog Cage Size

If you are shopping for a Rottweiler, the number you want is a crate size, and the usual answer is 48 inches long. PetMD’s crate chart, which we opened, lists a 48″ x 30″ x 32″ crate for dogs of 90 to 110 lb up to 42 in long and 26 in tall, and names the Rottweiler as an example. But the AKC breed standard puts adult males at 24 to 27 inches at the shoulder, so the biggest dogs can sit above that chart’s height row. This guide shows how to measure your own dog, how the two sources differ, and what several 48-inch crate listings actually state about their inner dimensions.

Quick answer

Start at a 48-inch crate for an adult Rottweiler, then confirm with a tape measure. PetMD’s sizing guide says to base the crate on your dog’s measurements, not weight or breed alone, and to go to the next size up if any measure is too tight. The AKC adds 3 to 4 inches to the dog’s standing height and length. If your dog is above 110 lb, PetMD’s chart has no row for it, so measure carefully and ask the crate maker for interior dimensions. A puppy should not get an adult-size crate without a divider panel.

What the sources say

Size of the breed

The AKC Rottweiler standard, which we opened as a PDF, gives the size as “Dogs – 24 inches to 27 inches. Bitches – 22 inches to 25 inches, with preferred size being mid-range of each sex.” Those are heights at the shoulder. The size section we read does not give a weight, so we do not quote a weight for the breed. PetMD’s chart row for a 90 to 110 lb dog lists the Rottweiler among example breeds but caps dog height at 26 in. That is a small conflict at the top of the breed range: a 27-inch male is taller than the row says. Treat the chart as a starting point.

How to measure

The AKC says to measure with the dog standing: height from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet, and length from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail, then add 3 to 4 inches to each. PetMD says the dog should stand with ease, turn around, have at least 2 inches of clearance above the head when sitting, and fully extend its limbs lying on its side. The two rules are close, and both are more reliable than a breed label.

Not too big

The AKC warns against a crate much bigger than the dog needs, because an oversized crate lets a dog eliminate in one corner and rest in another. For a growing puppy it recommends an expandable crate sized for the breed’s adult size with an adjustable divider. PetMD also says oversized crates can cause accidents during house training.

Crate size chart for large breeds (PetMD)

Crate (L x W x H) Dog weight Dog length Dog height Example breeds
36″ x 24″ x 26″ 41 to 70 lb Up to 30 in Up to 20 in English Bulldog, Pit Bull Terrier
42″ x 28″ x 30″ 71 to 90 lb Up to 36 in Up to 24 in Labrador Retriever, Boxer
48″ x 30″ x 32″ 90 to 110 lb Up to 42 in Up to 26 in German Shepherd, Rottweiler

Source: PetMD, “How To Choose the Right Crate Size for Your Dog or Puppy,” opened 2026-10-18. The chart has no row above 110 lb, and the 71 to 90 and 90 to 110 lb rows both include 90 lb.

Sizing a dog that measures 38 in long

Say you measure a dog at 38 in nose to tail tip and 25 in tall, using the chart’s definitions. The AKC rule adds 3 to 4 inches: 41 to 42 in long and 28 to 29 in tall. A 42″ x 28″ x 30″ crate passes on paper, since 42 is at least 42 and 30 is at least 29. But PetMD’s 42-inch row is for dogs of 71 to 90 lb, and that dog may be heavier. PetMD says to go up a size when any measure is tight, so the 48″ x 30″ x 32″ crate is the safer pick. Now subtract bedding: PetMD notes mats and beds take up space, so a 2-inch mat in a crate with a 30-inch interior height leaves 28 inches. Run this on your own numbers before ordering.

What 48-inch listings actually say

We opened these Amazon listings on 2026-10-18. Specs are the sellers’ statements.

Asee’m 48 inch heavy duty crate with wheels

The listing gives an external size of 47.2 in long x 28 in wide x 31 in high including wheel height, and an internal size of 46 x 27 x 25 inches. It has two locks on the front door, two pull-out trays and swivel casters with a locking mechanism, and describes the crate as for medium to large breeds. The interior height of 25 in is below the top of the AKC’s 24 to 27 inch range, and a dog needs space above its shoulders, so this one is tight for a large Rottweiler. The product dimension field says 48 x 28 x 31 inches and 46.65 lb.

SHUSHIM 48 inch heavy duty crate with wheels

This listing is made of 20-gauge steel with 0.5-inch bars and two safety locks on the door, with four wheels and screws to fit. Product dimensions are 47.2 x 30.7 x 35 inches and 50 lb. The listing does not separate interior from exterior, and the wheels may add to the height, so we cannot tell you the usable inside height. Ask the seller for interior dimensions before you commit.

KANING 48inch 2-door foldable wire crate: a listing that disagrees with itself

The title says 48inch, with a front and a side door, loop-buckle joints, slide-bolt latches and a plastic tray. But the Product Dimensions field says 30.9 x 19.3 x 21.5 inches, which is a medium crate, not a 48-inch one. The listing was first available on September 14, 2026, so it is new. We would not buy it for a Rottweiler until the seller confirms the real size.

Amazon Basics 42-inch wire crate, for comparison

The listing gives 42 x 28 x 30 inches and 34.1 lb, with two doors and a divider, and says it suits pets under 38 x 26 inches (length by height), naming Poodle, Boxer, Husky and German Shepherd. Its 26-inch height ceiling is at the low end of the AKC’s 24 to 27 inch range for adult males, and the listing does not name the Rottweiler. It could suit a young or smaller dog, but it is not a first choice for a large adult.

MidWest SUV crate: when the listing caps the weight

The MidWest side-by-side SUV crate is listed for dogs up to 70 lb and about 37 x 20.75 x 26 inches. The Product Dimensions field says 28.88 inches wide, a mismatch with the bullet. Either way, the 70 lb cap rules it out for an adult Rottweiler. It is here as an example of why you should read the weight line, not just the length.

For a Rottweiler puppy

Buy for the adult dog and shrink it. The MidWest divider panel listing is for 48-inch MidWest models (it names 1548, 1548DD, 1648, 1648DD, 1548U, 1548DDU, 1648U, 1648DDU, 748UP and 1948) and measures about 29.4 x 27.3 inches. It fits only those models, so check your crate’s model number. Move the divider back as the puppy grows, as the AKC describes. For help with crate habits, ask your vet or a certified trainer.

Pad and cover size

A crate is not the only thing to size. A mat or pad needs to fit inside the floor of the crate, and a cover needs to match the outside. The mat size rule is simple: pick a pad no longer or wider than the interior floor, and remember PetMD’s point that it eats into the height. Our related guides on crate covers, extra-large dog beds and harnesses for large dogs cover the nearest topics; the site has no crate pad guide yet.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by the title number. The KANING listing shows a 48inch title and a 30.9 inch dimension field.
  • Reading exterior as interior. Wheels and trays add to outside height.
  • Ignoring bedding. A pad takes height from the dog.
  • Skipping the divider for a puppy.
  • Using a weight rule alone. PetMD says to base the crate on measurements.

FAQ

What size crate does a Rottweiler need?

PetMD’s chart lists a 48″ x 30″ x 32″ crate for dogs of 90 to 110 lb that are up to 42 in long and 26 in tall, and names the Rottweiler. Measure your dog, because individual dogs differ.

How tall is a Rottweiler?

The AKC standard gives 24 to 27 inches for males and 22 to 25 inches for females, measured at the shoulder.

Is a 42-inch crate big enough for an adult Rottweiler?

Maybe for a smaller dog, but PetMD’s 42-inch row is for 71 to 90 lb and up to 24 in tall, and its Rottweiler example is in the 48-inch row. Go by your own measurements.

How much room should the dog have?

The AKC says to add 3 to 4 inches to the standing height and length. PetMD says at least 2 inches of clearance above the head when sitting. Do not go much bigger than that, so the dog cannot use one end as a toilet.

My puppy is small. Do I buy a small crate first?

The AKC suggests an expandable crate sized for the adult with a divider. A divider lets one crate cover both stages.

Bottom line

For most adult Rottweilers, the right size is the 48-inch class, confirmed with your own measurements and with interior dimensions from the maker. Be careful with listings that mix interior, exterior and title sizes. Dogs above 110 lb fall outside PetMD’s chart, so measure and ask the seller.
