Tall Pet Gates for Large Dogs: 10 Options, 32 to 36 Inches
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
The best tall pet gates for large dogs are tall enough to block the jumps your dog can make, wide enough for your opening and mounted so they stay put. This comparison covers the 10 tall gates in our research file, all 32 or 36 inches high. Four listings describe puppies, small or medium dogs, and only one names large breeds.
Each entry uses only the listing fields recorded on 2026-10-21, plus guidance from the three sources at the end. It is a comparison, not a ranking. No listing gives a jump rating, a push-out figure or a dog weight limit, so no height here is a guarantee for any dog.
Quick answer
- Height. The 36-inch options are 4 inches taller than the 32-inch ones, which is 12.5 percent more height. Against AKC’s 30-inch minimum for bigger breeds or jumpers, the 36-inch options give 6 inches of margin and the 32-inch options give 2.
- Dog size. Only Vantas names large breeds, as examples. Mumeasy lists all breed sizes. Four list puppies, small or medium dogs. Four name no size.
- Width. Measure your opening first. Mumeasy fits openings from 29.6 to 40.5 inches, and Vantas opens to 120 inches, the widest in the set.
- Lock and mount. Eight listings state a double or dual lock. Two name only a latch, and mount options vary from freestanding to wall-mounted.
Height: what 32 and 36 inches mean for your dog
AKC’s dog gate guide says bigger breeds or jumpers will probably need a gate at least 30 inches high, and that the gate should be tall enough that the dog cannot jump over it. The same guide says to consider whether nearby furniture could help a dog climb over. AKC’s fence guide adds that short picket fences may not contain large dogs or dogs determined to get over.
Formula: listed height minus 30 inches gives the margin over that minimum. For the 36-inch options, 36 minus 30 equals 6. For the 32-inch options, 32 minus 30 equals 2. The percentage difference between the two heights is (36 minus 32) divided by 32, which is 0.125, or 12.5 percent. That is the whole height gap in this set, and the listings do not turn it into a jump height.
| Product (ASIN) | Height as stated | Margin over 30 in | Width as stated | Dog size as stated |

| No Pawblems 36 in (B0FMK3L9H6) | 36 in | 6 in | 104 in | Not stated |

Width, panels and the item-width field
Formula: total open width equals panel width times panel count. Lezbanz lists an item width of 20 inches with four panels, and 20 times 4 equals 80, which matches its title. Paulmele at 80 inches lists 20 inches, and 20 times 4 equals 80. The Paulmele 32-inch gate with a 96-inch title lists an item width of 24 inches, and 24 times 4 equals 96.
The Paulmele 36-inch gate has the same 96-inch title and four panels, but its item width is 96 inches. Those two Paulmele listings do not describe their widths the same way, so the field cannot be read the same across the set. The No Pawblems 104-inch and Vantas 120-inch figures are total widths, as their bullets describe, and Mumeasy’s 40-inch item width sits inside its 29.6 to 40.5-inch opening range. Measure your opening, then confirm the total width with the seller before you order.
Mounting and what a large dog may push
AKC’s dog gate guide describes pressure-mounted gates as a good option for renters or for anyone not making permanent changes. It describes hardware-mounted gates as attached to a wall or doorway with brackets or bolts, which makes them more secure than other options, and as designed to stay in one place. Freestanding gates need no wall work, and the listings describe their stability through feet and pads.
AKC also says lighter construction may not stand up to a large dog or one determined to get through the barrier. The two lightest 36-inch listings are Lezbanz at 13 pounds and Mumeasy at 14 pounds. Lighter does not prove weaker, and the listings give no push or load figure, so treat the weight as a prompt to check the lock and mount, not as a strength rating.
Mumeasy lists both pressure mounting and hardware mounting. Its listing says it can be used at the top or bottom of stairs when screwed to the wall. We did not open a source that confirms or limits that use, so this post makes no stair-safety claim. For stair gates in general, see our general dog gate guide.
Dog size: what the listings say
Only Vantas names large breeds in its text, giving Bulldogs, Labradors and Golden Retrievers as examples of the small, medium and large dogs it suits. Mumeasy’s breed line says all breed sizes, although its title and bullets describe a baby gate. Lezbanz at 36 inches, Lezbanz at 32 inches, Snuowu and Malier describe puppies, small and medium dogs. The remaining four do not name a size.
For eight of the ten listings, large-dog fit is not stated at all, and for Mumeasy it is a breed line on a baby gate. Height alone does not settle fit, because no listing describes how any dog jumps, pushes or climbs. AKC’s escape guide says a dog will use whatever is near a fence to climb up and over, so the fact that a gate is tall does not cover climbing aids near it.
How we chose
The set is the 10 tall gates in our research file, with listing text recorded on 2026-10-21. The criteria were a listed height of 32 or 36 inches and a freestanding, pressure-mounted or wall-mounted pet gate with a door. All 10 meet them, so none was dropped. The 32-inch cutoff is the shortest height the tall file contains. The two 30-inch No Pawblems gates in our outdoor file are not in this post.
The order follows the research file, not quality. We did not rank the gates and do not claim that one is better than another. Mumeasy is written as a baby gate, and we kept it because its listing names dogs and all breed sizes. Its limits are in its product entry.
What we could not verify
- Jump height and push force. No listing gives a jump rating or a push-out figure, and our sources give no jump height for any breed.
- Large-dog fit. Only Vantas names large breeds outright, so fit for large dogs is unverified for the other nine listings.
- Width meaning. The Paulmele 36-inch and Paulmele 32-inch listings read their width fields differently, as shown above.
- Mumeasy opening range. The bullet says it fits 29.6 to 40.5 inches, while the title says 29.7 to 40.5 inches.
- Bar layout. None of the ten states whether its panels have horizontal bars, which AKC flags for climbing dogs.
- Stair use. The Mumeasy listing describes top-of-stairs use. Our sources do not confirm or limit it.
- Lock strength. The double and dual lock statements do not come with a strength figure.
- Mount hardware. Some wall-mount listings include hardware and some do not say. Screw and anchor ratings are not stated anywhere in the set.
Buying checklist
- Decide the height first. If your dog jumps, choose a 36-inch listing, because it gives 6 inches over the AKC minimum rather than 2.
- Measure your opening, then compare it with the stated total width or the opening range. Mumeasy is the only one with a stated opening range.
- Check the closure. Eight listings state a double or dual lock, and the No Pawblems 36-inch and Vantas listings state only a latch.
- Choose the mount. Pressure-mounted and hardware-mounted options differ in how they stay put, as AKC’s guide describes.
- Remove climbing aids near the gate, and ask the seller about the bar layout if your dog climbs.
Questions to ask the seller
The listings leave the points that matter most for a large dog open. These questions cover those gaps, and the answers belong on the listing before you pay for the gate.
- Does the listed height include the feet or the wall hardware, and what is the height when the gate is fully assembled?
- Which dog sizes and weights is the gate designed for, in writing?
- Are the bars horizontal, vertical or mesh, and how far apart are they?
- Which screws and anchors come with the wall-mount version, and which wall types are they meant for?
- Can a dog that pushes or leans open the latch or the double lock, and what does the maker say about that?
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a tall gate is a large-dog gate. Only Vantas names large breeds, and four listings name puppies or small and medium dogs.
- Treating 32 inches as a large margin. It is 2 inches over the AKC minimum for bigger breeds or jumpers.
- Trusting the width field alone. The two Paulmele 96-inch listings use different item widths for the same title.
- Ignoring the opening range. Mumeasy fits only 29.6 to 40.5 inches, so a wider opening will not take it.
- Leaving climbing aids in place. AKC’s escape guide says the aids near the fence are what a dog climbs.

FAQ
How tall should a gate be for a large dog?
AKC’s dog gate guide says bigger breeds or jumpers will probably need a gate at least 30 inches high. The gates here are 32 or 36 inches, so the 36-inch options give 6 inches over that minimum. Height alone does not settle it, because the listings give no jump rating and AKC says the gate should be tall enough that the dog cannot jump over it.
Does a tall gate hold a large dog that pushes on it?
The listings give no push or load figure. AKC says lighter construction may not stand up to a large dog or one determined to get through, so check the closure and the mount, and watch how your own dog pushes on the gate.
Can I put a tall gate at the top of the stairs?
The Mumeasy listing says it can be used at the top or bottom of stairs when screwed to the wall. We did not open a source that confirms or limits that use, so we make no stair-safety claim. Our general dog gate guide covers stair and doorway gates.
Will a tall gate stop a dog from climbing over?
No listing says it will. AKC advises removing climbing aids near the gate, and avoiding gates with horizontal bars for a dog known to climb. None of the ten listings states its bar layout, so ask the seller before you order.
Which tall gate suits a wide opening?
Vantas opens to 120 inches, the widest in this set. Mumeasy fits openings from 29.6 to 40.5 inches. Most four-panel options run 80 or 96 inches. Multiply panel width by panel count to check any gate before you order.
Bottom line
Match the opening first, then check the lock and the mount, and choose a 36-inch listing if your dog jumps. The 36-inch options give 6 inches over the AKC minimum, and the 32-inch options give 2. Most listings do not name large dogs, so ask the seller about size and bar layout before you buy.
