Best Pet Supplies Dog Harnesses and Toys: 9 Listings Compared by Fit

Best Pet Supplies dog products are mostly step-in harnesses and squeaky plush toys, and the listings for them disagree on several details. If you searched for best pet supplies dog, the practical answer is to choose the harness by your dog’s chest measurement and the toy by how hard your dog chews. This guide covers the nine dog products from the Best Pet Supplies line in our research pool, and it explains why three other items were left out.

Quick answer

  • Measure your dog’s chest before you look at any size label. The listings give chest ranges, and the vest sizes do not follow breed or weight.
  • The six harnesses in this set cover chests from 14.5 to 21 inches. Four are step-in vests that the bullets mark as not for large dogs, one is a step-in flex harness, and one is a lock harness with the widest range.
  • Three plush toys are listed for chewing, but no listing says how strong its stitching is. Treat them as supervised toys until you have seen how your dog plays with them.
  • Where a title and the bullets or specifications disagree, this guide follows the bullets and says so in the section on listing conflicts.

Start with your dog’s chest

Chest girth matters more than weight when you choose a harness. AKC’s measuring guide names chest girth as usually the most important measurement for clothing and harnesses, and it says to check the fit by sliding two fingers between the measuring tape and the dog. Use the same idea here. Wrap a soft tape around the chest at its widest point, keep it snug without pulling it tight, and write the number down.

Then compare that number with the chest range in the listing. Do not compare it with the breed. The vest bullets say the same thing in plain terms: sizing does not correspond to breed or weight, so measure first. The table below gives each harness’s chest range and weight range, taken from its own title, highlight and specification lines.

Harness (listing title, colour, size) Size label Chest range (inches) Range width (inches) Weight range (specifications)
Voyager Step-in Flex Adjustable Dog Harness, Moss Green, Small Small 15 to 18 3 14 to 17 lbs
Voyager Step-in Air Dog Vest Harness, Moss Green, Small Small 14.5 to 16 1.5 10 to 14 lbs
Voyager Step-in Air Dog Vest Harness, Moss Green, Medium Medium 16 to 18 2 15 to 18 lbs
Voyager Step-in Air Dog Vest Harness, Baby Blue, Small Small 14.5 to 16 1.5 10 to 14 lbs
Voyager Step-in Air Dog Vest Harness, Fuchsia, Small Small 14.5 to 16 1.5 10 to 14 lbs
Voyager Step-in Lock Dog Harness, Black, Medium Medium 17 to 21 4 not stated

The range width is the top figure minus the bottom figure. The flex harness covers 15 to 18 inches, so its width is 3 inches (18 minus 15 is 3). The lock harness covers 17 to 21 inches, so its width is 4 inches (21 minus 17 is 4). The vests are narrower. The Moss Green Medium covers 16 to 18 inches, a width of 2 inches (18 minus 16 is 2), and the three Small vests cover 14.5 to 16 inches, a width of 1.5 inches (16 minus 14.5 is 1.5).

Two things follow from the table. First, the Small vest tops out at 16 inches and the Medium vest starts at 16 inches, so the two sizes meet at one point with no gap. A dog whose chest measures exactly 16 inches fits both labels, and the weight ranges, 10 to 14 pounds for the Small and 15 to 18 pounds for the Medium, are then the tie-breaker. Second, the weight ranges do not come from the chest figures. Five of the six harnesses give a weight range in their specifications, and the lock harness gives none. For that harness, the chest range is the only fit figure on the listing.

The four step-in vests

The four Step-in Air vests share one set of bullets. Those bullets describe a soft, breathable air mesh, two reflective bands on the sides, a hook and loop fastener, a buckle and double D-rings, and a design the bullets say you can step into and clip at the back. The same bullets say the vests are not for large dogs. The bullets do not name a weight or chest figure for the large-dog limit, so the table above is the only fit guide in the listing.

The vests differ in their specifications, and the differences matter when you compare them. The Moss Green Small lists its breed size as Medium and Small, and its weight range is 10 to 14 pounds. The Moss Green Medium lists Pet Type as Cat and Dog, and its weight range is 15 to 18 pounds. The Baby Blue Small lists Pet Type as Cat but Target Species as Dog. The Fuchsia Small lists Pet Type as Cat and Dog, Target Species as Dog, and a Dog Breed Size of Medium, even though its size label is Small.

Taken together, the four vest specifications say a good deal about who the vest is for. Each vest’s highlight line says cats are compatible, so none of the four is a dog-only product on its own page. The table below shows the cat and dog signals for every product that survives in this guide, so you can see them side by side.

Listing Pet Type field Target Species field Cats named in highlight or bullets
Step-in Flex Adjustable harness, Small Dog, Small Animal not listed no
Step-in Air vest, Moss Green, Small Dog not listed yes
Step-in Air vest, Moss Green, Medium Cat, Dog not listed yes
Step-in Air vest, Baby Blue, Small Cat Dog yes
Step-in Air vest, Fuchsia, Small Cat, Dog Dog yes
Step-in Lock harness, Black, Medium not listed not listed no
Crinkle Duck, Yellow Dog Dog no
Crinkle Duck, Blue Dog Dog no
Crinkle Chicken, Brown Dog Dog no

If you buy a vest for a dog, the Target Species field is the one to read first. The Baby Blue Small is the clearest case: its Pet Type says Cat, and its Target Species says Dog. The listing does not explain the difference, so the guide treats it as a dog product, and it says so on the card.

The flex and lock harnesses

The Voyager Step-in Flex Adjustable harness in Moss Green, Small is the only flex harness in the set. Its bullets say a step-in design lets the dog step in and the harness is clipped in seconds. They also say the harness applies gentle pressure across the chest rather than the neck and reduces pulling. The listing does not give a method for that claim, and the sources we opened do not compare harness designs. The bullets also name 3M Scotchlite reflective straps. Its specifications list the closure as a buckle with a double ring, the material as nylon and polyester, and the care as hand wash only. Its highlight line says the harness is fully adjustable and has an all-weather breathable air mesh. The chest range of 15 to 18 inches is three inches wide, which is wider than any of the four vests.

The Voyager Step-in Lock Dog Harness in Black, Medium is the only lock harness in the set, and its title gives the widest chest range, 17 to 21 inches. Its bullets need a careful reading. They mix harness copy with leash copy, and one line calls a Voyager 5 ft nylon leash a copy of the harness. The copy does not say which parts belong to the harness and which belong to a leash. For that reason this guide uses only the lines that describe the harness itself: the soft, breathable and fully adjustable air mesh, the lightweight build, and the strong buckles and heavy-duty D-ring at the back. The listing does not describe a leash for this product, and this guide does not describe one either.

The lock harness is the one card in this set without a weight range, so its chest range does most of the work. For a chest above 18 inches, it is the only harness in this set whose range reaches that size. Confirm the weight with the seller’s own product page before you order, because the listing in the research pool does not state one.

What the harness claims cover and what they leave out

Each harness card lists the claims the bullets make. Some of those claims are about fit, and the sources we opened do cover fit. AKC’s harness article says that a harness that is too big can let a dog wiggle out and escape, and that a harness that is too tight can be painful or uncomfortable, especially in hot weather. Those two points are the reason the chest table comes first. A loose harness is a control problem, and a tight one is a comfort problem, so the chest range is the number to check.

Other claims are listing claims. The breathable mesh is one. The vests and the flex harness say the air mesh keeps a dog comfortable through the seasons. The sources we opened do not say whether one mesh harness keeps a dog cooler than another. Treat the breathable line as the seller’s wording, not as a finding.

The reflective details are easier to check, and they are also easier to get wrong. AKC’s swimming safety page suggests reflective trim for activities in the evening, and AKC’s life jacket article says reflective trim helps a dog stay visible in lower light. That advice is about water work, not daily walks. The harness bullets say the reflective bands improve visibility on early mornings and evenings, and that is a fair reading of what reflective material does. This guide does not say that the bands make a dog safe on a road. It says only that the listing describes them.

Care differs between the cards. The four vests list machine washing. The flex harness lists hand washing only. The lock harness and the toys give no care line in their specifications, so check the product page before you wash them.

Fitting checklist before you walk the dog

  1. Measure the chest at its widest point and write the number down.
  2. Find the card whose chest range holds that number. If the number sits exactly on a boundary, use the weight range as the tie-breaker.
  3. Put the harness on and slide two fingers under the straps. If you cannot, the harness is too tight. If the harness moves freely on the dog’s chest, it is probably too big.
  4. Check that the harness does not rub the front legs or sit so low that it catches the leg when the dog walks.
  5. Walk the dog for a few minutes indoors before you go out. Watch for stopping, scratching or a dog that backs out of the harness.
  6. Re-check the fit after a few weeks, because puppies and adult dogs change size and a harness that fitted in the spring may not fit in the autumn.

These steps build on AKC’s two-finger fit check and its harness advice, along with the listings’ own sizing notes. For a wider look at harness choices from other brands, see dog harness to wear all the time.

Plush toys from the same line

Three toys in the set are plush. Two are crinkle ducks, one yellow and one blue, and one is a crinkle chicken in brown. The table below sets out their listed details.

Toy (listing title, colour) Material Type (specifications) Size label Breed recommendation Dimensions (inches) Item weight Recommended uses
Crinkle Duck, Yellow Paper Large Large, Medium, Small 15.5 by 7.5 by 1.5 2.89 ounces Dog, Indoor, Pet
Crinkle Duck, Blue Plush Large Large, Medium, Small 15.5 by 7.5 by 1.5 82 grams Chewing, Playing
Crinkle Chicken, Brown Plush Large All breed sizes 9.84 by 7.48 by 1.57 0.1 kilograms Chewing

The duck bullets describe a soft toy with no stuffing, reinforced fabric and stitching, and a shape that is easy for a dog to carry. The chicken bullets describe crinkle material in the legs and stuffing in the head that squeaks. Those two descriptions are the main difference between the ducks and the chicken, and the chicken’s bullets also describe a shape that the title does not match.

Plush toys are a chewing question before they are a play question. AKC’s crate training page says that chew toys left in an unsupervised crate should be too large for the dog to swallow whole, and suited to the dog’s chewing style. The same page says a power chewer can tear through plush toys in minutes, and torn pieces can be a choking hazard. None of the three toys in this set is described as chew-proof. The duck listings say the toys are not edible or meant for consumption.

For a dog that carries and shakes a toy but does not rip it apart, a plush duck or chicken is a reasonable choice for supervised play. For a dog that pulls stuffing out of toys, pick a tougher toy, and remove any toy that has started to come apart. Our guide to durable chew toys for small dogs covers toys from other brands that are built for heavier chewing, and it is a better place to start for a hard chewer.

Listings left out of this guide

Three Best Pet Supplies listings were left out. Two are cat products. Their bullets say they fit all cat breeds or small to medium cats, and they name a Voyager 5 foot cat leash. Their specifications list the target species as cat. Those two are the Escape-Proof Step-in harness and leash in Baby Blue, Small, and the Step-in Lock cat harness and leash set in Pink, Small. Neither is a dog product, so neither is on the card list.

The third is a harness and leash combo in Baby Blue, XX-Small, for puppies. Its title says dog and names a dog 5 foot leash. Its specifications list the Target Species as cat and the Pet Type as Cat, Dog, Small Animal. The listing does not settle which animal it is for, so we left it out rather than guess. None of the nine products in this guide starts below a 14.5-inch chest, so a dog smaller than that needs a different listing.

Where the listings disagree

These are the conflicts in the listing record. The rule in this guide is simple. Where a title and a bullet disagree, the bullet wins. Where the bullets and the specifications disagree, both figures are given.

  1. Yellow Crinkle Duck material. The specifications list Paper. The bullets describe reinforced fabric and stitching. We follow the bullets.
  2. Yellow and Blue Crinkle Duck size. The size label reads Large, while the Dog Breed Size field reads Medium. The breed recommendation lists all three sizes. We give the breed recommendation and the dimensions, not one size label.
  3. Brown Crinkle Chicken shape. The title and the specifications say chicken. The bullets describe a six-legged octopus. We follow the bullets for the shape and keep the title for the name, and the card says so.
  4. Brown Crinkle Chicken size. The size label reads Large, while the Dog Breed Size field reads Small. We use the breed recommendation, which says all breed sizes.
  5. Step-in Lock harness copy. The bullets mix harness and leash lines. We use only the harness lines and do not describe a leash.
  6. Baby Blue Small vest species. The Pet Type field says Cat, while the Target Species field says Dog. We treat it as a dog product and note the conflict.
  7. Fuchsia Small vest breed size. The size label reads Small, and the breed recommendation says small and medium breeds, but the Dog Breed Size field reads Medium. We give the chest range from the size label.
  8. Moss Green Small vest breed size. The Dog Breed Size field reads Medium and Small, while the size label reads Small. Both are in the specifications, and we give both.

How we chose

  • We started with the 12 products in the research pool for this keyword. All twelve are listed under the Best Pet Supplies brand.
  • We kept dog products only. Two cat harness sets and one combo whose target species is cat were left out.
  • We kept nine products: six harnesses, four of them Step-in Air vests, one Step-in Flex harness and one Step-in Lock harness, and three plush toys.
  • Each card uses the listing’s own bullets, highlight line and specification table. The research pool holds no prices, ratings, review counts or sales ranks for these products, so none of them appears in this guide.
  • The cards are in the order the listings appear in the pool, not in a ranking. A harness that suits a small dog that pulls is not better than one for a small dog that does not pull. Each card says who it suits and who should skip it.

What we could not verify

  • Whether any harness reduces pulling. The flex harness says it does, through chest pressure. The sources we opened describe harness fit and comfort, but they do not compare harness designs or measure how much pulling falls.
  • How strong the plush toys are. The listings describe reinforced stitching and chewing, but they give no method or standard for strength, and the sources we opened do not cover toy strength.
  • Whether mesh keeps a dog cooler than other fabrics. The breathability is the listing’s own wording.
  • A weight limit for the lock harness, which its specifications do not give.
  • Whether every care line is complete. Only some products give a care line, and the toys give none.

FAQ

What size Best Pet Supplies harness fits my dog?

Start with the chest, not the breed. Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the chest and compare the number with the chest range in the table. The four step-in vests cover 14.5 to 18 inches between them. The flex harness covers 15 to 18 inches. The lock harness covers 17 to 21 inches. If the number falls between two labels, use the weight range the listing gives and check the bullets’ sizing note before you order.

Are these harnesses only for dogs?

Not always. Every vest’s highlight line says cats are compatible, and one vest lists Pet Type as Cat with Target Species as Dog. The cat harness sets in the Best Pet Supplies line are listed for cats, and this guide left them out. When the listing is unclear, read the Target Species field first.

Which toy suits a dog that chews hard?

None of the three plush toys in this set is described as chew-proof. AKC says a power chewer can tear plush toys apart in minutes, and torn pieces can be a choking hazard. For a hard chewer, supervise the toy during play and remove it once it is torn. A tougher toy made for heavy chewing is a better choice than any of these three.

Can I put these harnesses and toys in the washing machine?

The four Step-in Air vests specify machine washing. The Flex harness specifies hand washing only. The lock harness and the three toys give no care line in the research pool, so check the product page before you wash them.

Why are only nine of the twelve products in this guide?

The twelve products in the research pool include two cat harness sets and one combo whose target species is cat. Those three are not dog products on the evidence in their listings, so they are left out. The other nine are dog products, and each has its own card.

Bottom line

Measure your dog’s chest, choose the harness whose chest range holds that number, and treat any plush toy as supervised play until you know how your dog chews. For a hard chewer, look beyond this set, and read the Target Species field on every product before you buy.
