MidWest Homes for Pets Crates and Beds: 12 Listings Compared by Size and Weight

MidWest Homes for Pets sells crate kits, fleece and faux fur beds, and a crate pan cover, and the research pool holds twelve of its dog products. If you are shopping under the midwest homes for pets name, decide the crate size first and the bed size second, because most of the beds are sold as crate fits. This guide sorts the twelve listings into three crate kits, eight beds and one pan cover, then explains what each listing says about size, weight and use. It also marks the places where the listings disagree.
Quick answer
- Choose the crate by your dog’s length and standing height before you look at the kit’s name. AKC’s crate guidance is to measure both and add 3 to 4 inches to each figure.
- The three crate kits are 22, 24 and 30 inches. Each kit includes a crate, a bed and a cover, and the 22-inch and 30-inch kits also include two bowls.
- The beds run from 18 to 42 inches in the listings. Check the weight figure before you buy. The 42-inch bed is rated to 90 pounds in its specifications, and the three 18-inch beds are rated to 6 pounds.
- Where the bullets and the specifications give different sizes for the same bed, this guide gives both figures and says which one it follows.
Start with the crate size
A crate needs to give the dog a den-sized space, neither cramped nor much too large. AKC’s crate guide puts it plainly: the dog needs enough room to sit, stand and lie down comfortably, but a crate that is much too large is not the goal. Measure your dog standing, take the height from the top of the head to the floor and the length from the nose to the base of the tail, then add 3 to 4 inches to each figure. That is the minimum interior you should look for, and it is the test the kit’s size label has to pass.
The three kits in this set differ mostly in their size. The table gives each kit’s listed dimensions, its breed size, what it includes, and its listed weight.
| Crate kit (listing title) | Dimensions (inches, specifications) | Dog breed size | Included in the kit | Item weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Double Door iCrate Starter Kit, 30-inch, for Medium Breeds | 30 by 19 by 21 | Medium | Crate with divider panel, fleece bed, polyester cover, two 20-ounce bowls | 17.6 pounds |
| Double Door 24-inch Dog Crate Kit, for Small Breeds | 24 by 18 by 19 | Small | Two-door crate with tray, gray bed, gray cover | 15 pounds |
| Double Door iCrate Starter Kit, 22-inch, for Extra-Small Dogs | 22 by 13 by 16 | Extra Small | Crate with divider panel, fleece bolster bed, polyester cover, two 10-ounce bowls | 9.5 pounds |
The floor area of a crate is its length times its width, and it is the figure that tells you how much room the dog has to turn and lie down. The 30-inch kit has 570 square inches of floor (30 times 19). The 24-inch kit has 432 square inches (24 times 18), which is about three-quarters of the 30-inch kit. The 22-inch kit has 286 square inches (22 times 13), about half the floor of the 30-inch kit. Floor area does not replace the height figure, though. The 22-inch kit is 16 inches tall, so a dog with a tall head or a high standing height may not have the room AKC describes.
The three kits are for three breed sizes, and their bullets say so. The 30-inch kit names medium breeds. The 24-inch kit names small breeds and the 22-inch kit names extra-small dogs and puppies. If your dog sits between two kits, measure it against the crate dimensions, not against the breed label. The breed label is a guide, and the dimensions are the figure you can check.
What the kits include, and what they do not
Two of the kits include bowls. The 30-inch kit has two 20-ounce stainless steel bowls that the bullets say snap into the crate, and the 22-inch kit has two 10-ounce bowls of the same design. The bullets describe the bowls as removable for refilling and cleaning. The 24-inch kit does not include bowls, and its bullets do not mention any. If you need bowls for that kit, buy them separately and check the size before you order.
The kits also differ in the crate’s frame. The 30-inch kit’s specifications give the material as metal. The 24-inch kit’s specifications give the material as polyester, which does not describe a crate frame, while its bullets describe a two-door crate and a leak-proof plastic pan. The listing does not say what the frame is made of, so this guide does not name one.
The bullets for every kit describe a leak-proof pan and rubber feet. They do not describe how the crate is ventilated. AKC says that all dog crates need ventilation holes or mesh on the sides so the dog can breathe. The MidWest listings in this set do not give the vent layout, so check the product page for the vent pattern before you rely on a kit for a dog that will be in the crate for hours.
Heat matters in one specific place. A crate kept in a car is an enclosed space, and AKC warns that heatstroke can develop within minutes in enclosed spaces such as cars. Five of the bed listings name cars or vehicles as a use, so this is the use most likely to combine a closed space with heat. For car use, keep the crate out of direct sun and never leave the dog inside a parked car.
The beds: sizes, weights and fill
Seven of the eight beds are bolster beds in fleece, faux fur or polyester, and the eighth is a mocha plush mat. The MAXX bed is the one rugged polyester bolster in the set. The table below gives each bed’s listed size in both places the listing gives one, and its weight figure.
| Bed (listing title, short form) | Size in bullets (inches) | Size in specifications (inches) | Weight in bullets | Maximum weight in specifications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QuietTime Bolster, 36-inch crates, Medium to Large | 36 by 23 | 36 by 23 by 2.6 | 41 to 70 pounds | 70 pounds |
| QuietTime Bolster, 42-inch crates, Large | 42 by 26 | 42 by 26 by 3 | 71 to 90 pounds | 90 pounds |
| QuietTime Bolster, 30-inch crates, Medium | 30 by 21 | 30 by 21 by 2.5 | 21 to 40 pounds | 40 pounds |
| Intermediate QuietTime MAXX, 36-inch crates, Black | 35.5 by 24 by 3 | 35 by 24 by 3 | 41 to 70 pounds | 40 pounds |
| QuietTime Bolster, 24-inch crates, Small Breed, Gray | 24 by 18 | 24 by 18 by 2.25 | 12 to 20 pounds | 25 pounds |
| QuietTime XXS Bolster, 18-inch crates, Gray | 17 by 12 | 18 by 12 by 2 | Toy breeds up to 10 pounds | 6 pounds |
| QuietTime Fashion XXS Bolster, 18-inch crates, Blue | 18 by 12 | 18 by 12 by 2 | Toy breeds up to 10 pounds | 6 pounds |
| QuietTime Deluxe XXS Plush, Mocha Ombre Swirl | 18 by 12 | 17 by 11 by 1.5 | Toy breeds up to 10 pounds | 6 pounds |
Bed floor area works the same way as crate floor area. The 36-inch bed has 828 square inches (36 times 23). The 42-inch bed has 1,092 square inches (42 times 26), and the three 18-inch beds have 216 square inches each (18 times 12). The 42-inch bed therefore offers about five times the sleeping area of an 18-inch bed. For a larger bed outside this brand, see the big extra large dog bed guide. Divided out, 1,092 divided by 216 is about 5.06.
AKC’s bed guide says a bed should suit the dog’s size, with enough room to stretch out, and a removable cover that can be washed easily each week. Those are the two tests this guide applies to every bed in the set. The covers are described as machine washable on most of the QuietTime listings, and the MAXX bed says it can be spot cleaned or put in a washing machine and dryer. None of the eight beds is described as a cot. AKC notes that cot-style beds can help keep dogs cool and help support joints, but no bed in this set is one of them, so that point does not apply here.
No listing in the set describes its bed as orthopedic. The QuietTime beds describe a bolstered design with a cushioned poly-cotton base, and the MAXX bed describes overstuffed bolsters and a non-slip bottom. AKC says that many dogs, not only senior dogs, can benefit from orthopedic beds, and that is a reason to look for support. If you want a firmer, orthopedic-style bed for comparison, our guide to orthopedic dog beds with a plush pillowtop covers that category. It does not say a bolster is orthopedic, and the MidWest listings do not make that claim. If your dog has joint trouble, ask your vet about bedding before you buy, because Cornell’s osteoarthritis page lists difficulty getting up from lying down as one sign of the disease, and a bed does not replace a vet’s plan.
Which bed fits which crate
The bed’s listed size is the figure to match to the crate, not the breed. The table above shows that the 36-inch QuietTime bed is sold for 36-inch crates, the 42-inch bed for 42-inch crates, and so on. Two beds deserve a closer look. The MAXX bed is a 36-inch bed with a black cover, and its bullets say it fits 36-inch crates. Its dimensions are 35.5 by 24 by 3 inches in the bullets, and the specifications give 35 by 24 by 3 inches. The difference is small, but a snug fit inside a crate is the goal, so measure the crate pan before you order.
The 24-inch bed is the mid-size option for small breeds. Its bullets give a 12 to 20 pound range, and its specifications give a maximum weight of 25 pounds. Those two figures are not the same kind of number. The bullets name the breeds this bed suits best, and the specifications give the most weight the listing says the bed can carry. A 22-pound dog is above the bullets’ best-fit range and below the specification maximum, so the bed is still listed for that dog, but the bullets do not name it as the best fit.
The three XXS beds are sized for toy breeds, the bullets say, and they are rated to 6 pounds in the specifications. The bullets also say toy breeds up to 10 pounds, which is a bigger dog than the specifications allow. The two figures conflict, and the seller does not explain the gap. For a dog over 6 pounds, ask the seller which figure applies before you buy, or choose a larger bed from the table.
The pan cover
The Quiet Time reversible crate pan cover, 36 inch, is not a bed. It is a cover that slips over the crate’s plastic or metal pan and is fixed with a zipper. The bullets say it fits both iCrate and New World crates, and that its poly-cotton print side and fleece side can be turned to suit the season. The specifications list it as indoor use and as machine washable. It is the one item in this set that is meant to go into a crate you already own, so this guide keeps it in the list and labels it clearly.
A pan cover adds a layer and some sound damping, according to the bullets, and a dog that chews through beds may find a cover without seams and stuffing easier to leave alone. The listing says so directly. The cover does not support a dog’s weight in the way a bed does, though, and the listing does not give a weight limit for it. If your dog needs a cushion rather than a cover, buy one of the beds in the table instead.
What the listings disagree about
These are the conflicts in the listing record for the twelve products. The rule is the same as in the other guides in this batch: where a title and the bullets disagree, the bullets win; where the bullets and the specifications disagree, both figures are shown.
- The 18-inch gray QuietTime bed measures 17 by 12 inches in its bullets and 18 by 12 by 2 inches in its specifications. We give both.
- The 18-inch mocha plush bed measures 18 by 12 inches in its bullets and 17 by 11 by 1.5 inches in its specifications. We give both.
- The 36-inch MAXX bed gives a 41 to 70 pound range in its bullets and a 40 pound maximum in its specifications. The bullets also give 35.5 by 24 by 3 inches, while the specifications give 35 by 24 by 3 inches and list the shape as round. The shape conflicts with the rectangular dimensions, and we do not state a shape.
- The 30-inch QuietTime bed lists its material as plastic in the specifications, while its bullets describe a fleece top and a poly-cotton base. The specifications also name a different manufacturer, Fever Tree USA Inc. We follow the bullets for the bed’s make-up and give no material.
- The 24-inch crate kit lists its material as polyester in the specifications, while its bullets describe a crate with a leak-proof plastic pan. We do not state the frame material.
- The 18-inch fashion blue bed lists its Pet Type as Cat, while its bullets describe toy dogs and small cats. The listing covers both, and this guide does not treat it as cat-only.
- The 24-inch gray bed gives a 12 to 20 pound best-fit range in its bullets and a 25 pound maximum in its specifications. These are two figures for two purposes, and we give both.
- The 22-inch kit’s bullets say puppy or small dog, while its title says extra-small dogs and its breed size reads Extra Small. We follow the size label and the dimensions.

How we chose
- We started with the twelve MidWest Homes for Pets products in the research pool. All twelve are dog products listed under the brand.
- We kept all twelve. The pan cover is an accessory to a crate, but it is sold as a dog product with its own bullets, weight and use, so it stays in the set and is labelled as a cover.
- Each card uses the listing’s own bullets, dimensions and specification table. The research pool holds no prices, ratings, review counts or sales ranks for these products, so none appears here.
- The cards are not ranked. The crate kits come first, then the beds roughly from largest to smallest, and the pan cover last.
- Each card gives who the product suits, who should skip it and one limit that the listing states.
What we could not verify
- Whether any of these beds supports a dog with joint trouble. AKC says orthopedic beds can help many dogs, but the sources we opened do not compare bolstered beds with other beds, and the listings make no orthopedic claim.
- Whether the crate kits meet AKC’s ventilation point. The bullets do not describe the vent pattern, and the sources do not describe a MidWest vent layout.
- Which weight figure is correct for the 18-inch beds and the MAXX bed. The listings give two figures that disagree, and the seller does not explain the gap.
- The frame material of the 24-inch kit, which the bullets and specifications describe in different terms.
- How well the covers hold up after many washes. The listings give washing lines, and the sources we opened do not cover wear on fleece or faux fur.
- How a kit’s bowls fit a dog’s mouth and head. The listings give the bowl sizes in ounces and nothing about shape.
FAQ
Which MidWest Homes for Pets crate size does my dog need?
Measure your dog standing, from the top of the head to the floor and from the nose to the base of the tail. Add 3 to 4 inches to each figure and compare the result with the crate dimensions in the table. The 22-inch kit is 22 by 13 by 16 inches, the 24-inch kit is 24 by 18 by 19 inches, and the 30-inch kit is 30 by 19 by 21 inches. If your dog is between two sizes, choose the one that gives the room to lie down without being far larger than needed.
Are the MidWest beds orthopedic?
None of the twelve listings uses the word orthopedic in its bullets. The beds are described as bolstered, with a cushioned base and a removable cover. AKC says many dogs can benefit from orthopedic beds, but a bolster is not the same as an orthopedic design. If your dog has joint pain, ask your vet about the right bedding.
Can a MidWest bed go in the car?
Five of the bed listings name cars or vehicles as a use, including the 24-inch bed for small breeds. A car is an enclosed space, and AKC says heatstroke can develop within minutes in enclosed spaces such as cars. Keep any crate or bed out of direct sun, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
Which MidWest bed is rated for a large dog?
The 42-inch bed for large breeds is listed for 71 to 90 pounds in its bullets and has a 90 pound maximum in its specifications. The 36-inch bed is listed for 41 to 70 pounds, with a 70 pound maximum. The MAXX bed’s bullets give 41 to 70 pounds, but its specifications give 40 pounds, so ask the seller before you buy it for a dog over 40 pounds.
Does the pan cover replace a bed?
No. The pan cover slips over the crate pan and does not give a dog the cushion of a bed. The listing does not give a weight limit for it. If your dog needs a bed, choose one from the table, and use the pan cover only if you want an extra layer inside a crate you already own.
Bottom line
Choose the crate by the dog’s measured length and height, check the bed’s listed size against the crate’s pan, and read the weight figure in the specifications before you buy any bed for a large dog.
