Dog Crate Covers: 8 Listings Compared by Size and Airflow

Dog Crate Covers: 8 Listings Compared by Size and Airflow

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Details

A dog crate cover is a fabric drape or hood that fits over a wire crate to give the dog a more enclosed space. This guide compares eight crate covers from Amazon listings read on 2026-10-21. The short answer is that the cover has to leave air moving through the crate and has to match the crate’s size. The listings state sizes, mesh panels and fabric, but none states how warm the crate gets under the cover, and the sources we opened give no temperature limit.

Quick answer

  • Measure your crate before you buy. Seven of the eight listings name a crate length equal to the cover length, so there is no spare length. The 48-inch cover is 1.2 inches longer than the crate it names.
  • Keep air moving first. AKC says every dog crate needs ventilation holes or mesh fabric on the sides, and Cornell recommends a cover that leaves one or two sides open.
  • Seven listings mention airflow or ventilation; the Amazon Basics listing mentions neither.
  • Ask your vet before covering the crate of a short-muzzled, older or overweight dog, since Cornell lists those dogs as at higher risk of heatstroke.

Why cover a crate at all

Covers are mostly about privacy. Cornell says: “Many dogs feel comforted by being in a den, so we recommend covering a wire kennel with a sheet or another kind of custom crate cover that still leaves one or two sides open.” Cornell does not say a cover changes the crate’s temperature.

Cornell also sets a limit: “Some dogs may be highly stressed when confined or left alone.” Four listings say their covers reduce barking, anxiety or both. Those are the sellers’ claims, and none of the sources we opened confirms that a cover stops barking.

For a blanket instead, read our blanket guide for dog crates at night. It finds that none of its six blanket listings says it is designed to cover a crate. If you want the crate to look like furniture instead, see our dog crate furniture guide.

Airflow comes before privacy

AKC states the rule plainly: “All dog crates require proper ventilation holes or mesh fabric on the sides for your dog to breathe properly.” A cover sits over those same sides, so it can block openings the crate already has.

HiCaptain says its breathable mesh “ensures airflow to prevent overheating.” Explore Land’s breathable model describes mesh on four sides, and MidWest says its lift-up flaps adjust ventilation. Molly Mutt’s cotton canvas is described as breathable, with panels that roll up. None of these listings gives an airflow measurement.

Heat is the higher stake. Cornell says: “Short-muzzle breeds (also known as brachycephalic breeds), as well as older or overweight dogs are at a higher risk for heat stroke.” Cornell’s heatstroke guide also says that, unlike humans, dogs only have sweat glands on their paws and must rely on panting to cool down. The sources we opened do not say how much a cover adds to that risk, so ask your vet before covering the crate of any dog in those groups.

Measure the length margin before you buy

Each listing gives a cover size and names the crate it fits. Length margin (in) = cover length in the listing minus crate length the listing names. Zero means no extra length. AKC’s crate guide says: “Your dog needs enough room to sit, stand, and lie down comfortably within the crate.” The margin is measured against the crate, not the dog.

Applied to the eight listings, the margin is 0 for seven and +1.2 for the 48-inch cover (49.2 minus 48). Only three listings name all three crate dimensions: HiCaptain, Amazon Basics and Molly Mutt. The other five name a single length, so no height check is possible from those listings.

Cover Cover L x W x H (in) Crate named (in) Margin (in) Airflow (as stated) Fabric and care (as stated)
Explore Land 42 42 x 28 x 30 42 0 Mesh window with flap Polyester; brush clean, air dry
MidWest Homes 42 42 x 28 x 30 42 0 Lift-up flaps 100% polyester; machine washable
HiCaptain 36 36 x 23 x 25 36 x 23 x 25 0 Breathable mesh and mesh windows 600D polyester; care not stated
Amazon Basics 36 36 x 23 x 26 36 x 23 x 26 0 Not stated Fabric; removable for cleaning
Molly Mutt Quiet Light 30 x 19 x 21 30 x 19 x 21 0 Panels roll up; cotton called breathable Organic cotton canvas; washable, preshrinks
Explore Land Breathable 42 42 x 28 x 31 42 0 Mesh on four sides 95% polyester; not machine washable
nomiou 48 49.2 x 31.1 x 33 48 +1.2 Mesh window on back 600D Oxford, waterproof PU coating; care not stated
X-ZONE PET 24 24 x 18 x 20 24 0 Zippered panels said to help ventilation 420D polyester, PVC coating; care not stated

The nomiou listing tells buyers to measure before purchasing. None of the listings says whether its stated size allows for trays, handles or bent wire, so measure your crate’s outside length and width first. For crate choice itself, see our guide to dog crates and kennels, and for boarding, see our crate guide that starts with a size check.

Fabric, washing and the waterproof question

Molly Mutt’s cover is organic cotton canvas, which its listing says should not be soaked, because preshrunk cotton can still shrink. MidWest’s 100% polyester is described as machine washable. Explore Land’s breathable model says it is not machine washable or dryable.

Waterproof is the claim to check. The HiCaptain title says “Waterproof,” but its bullet says the 600D polyester is treated “for water resistance,” and the listing does not say which applies. None of the eight listings reports a water test, so each waterproof claim stays unconfirmed.

Puppies, chewers and heat-sensitive dogs

Cornell says: “A dog should never be left alone in a crate for an extended period of time without the opportunity to relieve themselves, play or exercise, and perform other natural behaviors.” Our puppy crate guide covers sizing for a growing dog.

No listing says its fabric resists chewing. MidWest’s title says its cover “Reduces Barking & Chewing,” which is a behavior claim, not a material claim. If your dog chews, check the edges, zippers and mesh often. If it pulls at blankets, see our guide to dog chews on blankets at night, and for the floor, see our crate mats for chewers guide.

How we chose

On 2026-10-21 we read the first Amazon results page for “dog crate cover,” which held 60 entries. Bed covers, bundled sets and floor pads were left out. We opened eight product pages, one for each cover kept, and recorded only what each listing states: size, the crate it names, mesh or vents, fabric and care. Prices, ratings and sales ranks were not used.

The product order follows cover length, from 24 to 48 inches. It is not a ranking. None of the eight ASINs appears on the crate-related live posts we checked on this site.

Buying checklist

  • Measure the crate’s outside length, width and height, then compare each with the listed cover size.
  • Check the door position. MidWest says its cover does not fit top-door crates.
  • Confirm that one or two sides can stay open, using mesh or a roll-up panel.
  • Read the care line before you buy, since Explore Land’s breathable model is not machine washable.
  • If the crate travels in a car, see our collapsible travel crate guide.
  • If your dog is a puppy, a chewer or heat-sensitive, ask your vet first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying the nominal size. Seven of the eight covers match the crate length named, leaving no spare length for trays or handles.
  • Covering all four sides. Cornell recommends leaving one or two sides open.
  • Ignoring the height conflict. The MidWest listing gives 30 inches for the product height and 42 inches for the item height.
  • Expecting a barking fix. The barking and anxiety benefits are listing claims only.
  • Relying on a cover for long crate days. Cornell says crate time should not run long without relief, play or exercise.

What we could not verify

  • How warm a crate gets under any of these covers. No source we opened gives a temperature, and no listing states one.
  • Whether any cover reduces barking, anxiety or chewing. Those are listing claims only.
  • How much air moves through any mesh. No listing gives an open-area figure.
  • Crate height for five covers, because those listings name only a length.
  • Durability. Only MidWest lists a warranty, a one-year manufacturer’s warranty.

FAQ

Will a dog crate cover make my dog overheat?

It can if the cover cuts off the crate’s airflow. AKC says every dog crate needs ventilation holes or mesh on the sides, and Cornell recommends one or two open sides. Cornell also lists short-muzzled, older and overweight dogs as at higher risk, so ask your vet first. No source we opened gives a temperature where a cover becomes unsafe. Cornell’s heatstroke guide says: “Signs of heatstroke include heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, collapse and more.” The same guide says: “Remain indoors during periods of extreme heat and humidity.”

Should I cover the whole crate?

Cornell’s advice is to leave one or two sides open, so choose a cover with a mesh panel or a roll-up side.

Does a crate cover stop barking or anxiety?

Some listings say so, including MidWest and HiCaptain. Those are seller claims. Cornell says many dogs feel comforted by a den, but also that some dogs become highly stressed when confined. No source we opened says a cover stops barking.

How do I measure for a crate cover?

Measure the crate’s outside length, width and height against the listed cover size. The nomiou cover is the one listed longer than its named crate, by 1.2 inches, so measure before you buy.

Can I use a blanket instead of a crate cover?

A blanket is not a cover. Our blankets guide covers fabric and size, and none of the six listings in our crate blanket guide says it is designed to cover a crate.

Is a crate cover safe for a puppy or a chewer?

Cornell’s guidance is that crate time should not run long without a chance to relieve themselves, play or exercise. No listing says its fabric resists chewing, so check the edges and zippers often if your dog chews.

Bottom line

Buy a dog crate cover only when its stated size matches your crate length and it leaves at least one side open or has a mesh panel. Ask your vet first if your dog is a puppy, a chewer or heat-sensitive.
